What is Entrepreneurship?
In truth, there as many definitions of the term as there
are textbooks and popular literature on the subject. It has
included aspects of risk, new venture creation, business
acumen, creativity, innovation, opportunity recognition,
added value and wealth creation. As business schools have
adopted the term for the past half-century, it has been
associated with the creation of new enterprises (New
Venture Creation). This is the most popular and widely held
perception of Entrepreneurship.
What is Arts Entrepreneurship?
Broadly speaking, the goal of Entrepreneurship in Arts
higher education is to help students self-create a career
in the Arts. This is accomplished through a variety of
methods - programs, degrees, classes, workshops, one-time
events, etc.
What is the Best Way to Define
Entrepreneurship?
Given the myriad of definitions and recent tendencies
towards "New Thinking" about Entrepreneurship, it may be
best to survey the entire field. Thus, the AEEN prefers to
conceptualize Entrepreneurship as a spatial phenomenon
instead of a set of characteristics or quantifiable
outcomes.
What is a Typical Arts Entrepreneurship
Curriculum?
As it stands presently, a typical one-semester course or
campus-wide Entrepreneurship minor consists of business
courses (Accounting, Management Principles, Organizational
Structures, etc.) or topics centered on New Venture
Creation. (Note that many variations exist). Roughly
75-100% of degree requirements or content concern this
topic. Some programs include tax law, digital rights
management and industry specific issues. Most programs
allow for an experiential opportunity in the form of an
internship.
How many Programs Exist?
Arts Entrepreneurship is an emerging discipline. Thus, the
number of Arts departments and Schools including
Entrepreneurship as a part of their course offerings are
growing every year. As a discipline, music is the best
represented. See the Institutions page for the latest list
of Arts Entrepreneurship efforts.
Is there a Model of Best Practices?
It's difficult to say. Certainly there are enough programs
from which to draw inspiration. However, until the "New
Thinking" about Arts Entrepreneurship can coalesce into a
recognizable form, most institutions implement Arts
Entrepreneurship efforts uniquely.
Are there New Trends in Arts Entrepreneurship
Education?
The short answer is yes. There are new trends in
philosophy, curricula, outcome, design and theory. Perhaps
the most stimulating trends are those intersecting the
Liberal Arts. However, many of these new trends have yet to
completely inform the discipline of Arts Entrepreneurship.
